City of Palermo (Sicily - Italy)
Palermo is a partially mountainous coastal town of 673.735 inhabitants, located 14 meters above sea level in the homonymous province, its territory covers an area of 158,90 sq km.
Palermo (Palermu in Sicilian) is a common Italian capital of the province of Palermo and the Sicilian Region.
It is the fifth Italian city by population after Rome, Milan, Naples and Turin and thirty-first at European level, as well as the main urban center of Sicily and Italy island.
Extended along the homonymous gulf in the Tyrrhenian Sea, and lies on the plain of Conca d'Oro, so called because the typical colors of citrus fruit that once dominated the landscape, it is completely surrounded by a natural wall: the mountains of Palermo.
The urban fabric is divided by the Oreto river flowing in its namesake valley.
Two other rivers, the Kemonia and Papireto, run today in the basement of the city after being buried over the centuries.
Established as a city-port by the Phoenicians around 734 BC, has always been a cultural and commercial hub between the West and Asia, therefore, a strategic place of transit at the center of the Mediterranean.
