It faces north, west and south of the sea and is bordered to the east by the provinces of Palermo and Agrigento.
It develops on the northwest coast, opposite the Egadi islands.

It is a well-developed industrial and commercial center thanks to the intense port activities.
It was inhabited by the Sicani and by Elimi, it was then under the control of the Carthaginians; after the battle of the Egadi in the 241 BC it entered the Roman possessions.
It was an important trading center under the Arabs and the Normans and its importance grew with the Aragonese.

Protesa between the waters of the Tyrrhenian and of Sicily Sea, at the extreme northwest of the island, Trapani is a city of strong character, with narrow and winding streets, the beautiful seafront, the ancient ghetto, and historic shops (as well as a few nautical miles, Archipelago of the Egadi), set on the top of the Mount San Giuliano it is the inhabited area of Erice, of medieval fabric, surrounded by megalithic walls; more inland, Calatafimi, with the Doric architecture of Segesta.

Along the coast, in a north-easterly direction, beyond the tonnara of Bonagia, they are reached San Vito lo Capo, and then the tonnara of Scopello, Castellamare del Golfo, and the delicious tranquility of the Zingaro Nature Reserve, coming down from Trapani towards the south, first the dazzling white ones meet salt flats, then the archaeological excavations of the Phoenician Mozia, the baroque Marsala, the port Mazara del Vallo; finally Selinunte, with its temples.

Still a Trapani jewel: Pantelleria Island, famous for its brightness, its capers, Its zibibbo; and it is precisely 'the sapling vine of Pantelleria', the latest addition to the prestigious World Heritage List UNESCO, which represents the first inclusion of an agricultural practice as an intangible and cultural asset.
