Emilia-Romagna is a region of Northern Italy, with the capital city of Bologna.
It is bordered to the east by the Adriatic Sea, to the north by the Veneto and Lombardy, to the west with Piedmont and Liguria, south of Tuscany, the Marches and the Republic of San Marino.

It consists of the union of two historical regions: Emilia, which includes the provinces of Piacenza, Parma, Reggio, Modena, Ferrara and a large part of the province of Bologna, with the capital, and Romagna, with the remaining provinces of Ravenna, Rimini, Forlì - Cesena and the eastern part of the province of Bologna (Imola and surrounding areas).

The historical Romagna, however, cover small areas in the Marche and Tuscany.
The areas that make up the region today are populated since ancient times, as indicated by several findings: the most famous case is the site of Monte Poggiolo, at Forli, where they were unearthed thousands of artefacts dating to around 800.000 years ago, demonstrating that the area was already inhabited in the Paleolithic.
Emilia-Romagna is a predominantly flat area, since the plains occupy the 47,8% of its territory.
The hills, the 27,1% of the territory, and the mountains, the 25,1% of the territory on, are located in the south of the region.

In Emilia Romagna the economy is very developed.
Typical industries are family-owned small and medium enterprises, there are large international groups except those food and automotive.
In addition, cooperatives are widespread, especially in the area of Reggio Emilia and Modena.

Industry is present in all three sectors.
In the primary region can count on a strong growth across the Po Valley and in Romagna.
There are many PDO and PGI products grown in the region.

The secondary sector is undoubtedly the most developed one: in the areas ranging from Bologna to Reggio Emilia there is a very high rate of mechanical, ceramic and textile industries (cars produced in Modena are known all over the world) such as Ducati, Ferrari, Lamborghini and Maserati.

Parma has been well developed in the food industry (Parma has been chosen as the seat of the European Institution in Sector Control, EFSA).

In the Ravenna, the chemical industry is very developed and is the largest port in the Adriatic Sea.
The service sector is also developed; The Romagna Riviera is the center of tourist attraction both in summer for the rich and organized accommodation (more than 5000 hotels) and in other periods of the year for the many youth entertainment venues; It is estimated that over a year there are around 10 million tourists who populate it; Italians and many foreigners, especially from Germany and Holland.

Winter tourism is also good on the ski resorts of the Apennines, including Sestola and other places on the slopes of Mount Cimone, and the Corno alle Scale in Bologna.

Much developed art tourism in art cities especially from abroad.
As far as the services sector is concerned, the region is the most important commercial hub in the country, Bologna being the primary hub of railway in the North, its freight station is the largest in Italy as traffic volume.
In Emilia then merge virtually all major highways in the country.
