City of Ales (Province of Oristano - Italy)
Ales is a wholly mountain town of 1.436 inhabitants, located 194 meters above sea level in the Province of Oristano, its territory covers an area of 21,70 sq km.
Ales It is a town the province of Oristano in Sardinia, In the historical region of Marmilla.
Small town in central Sardinia, located in the eastern slopes of the Monte Arci (812 m.), Formed during Cenozoic volcanic massif and who died in the Pleistocene (Neozoic).
From the mountain, with its resources (sources and consequent streams, woods of holm oaks of Aquafrida, The natural environment consists of a varied Mediterranean vegetation; same obsidianOnce real black gold) originated the villa Ales.
These resources are not only economic, but true natural beauty, now included in regional park of Monte Arci.
Episcopal decree of Julius II dell'8 December 1503 that unified between them and the diocese of Usellus Terralba (first bishop of Ales was Giovanni Sanna, appointed 18 / 01 / 1507, the death of the bishops of the two dioceses earlier).
It is probably the smallest bishopric of Italy with a cathedral built by the Countess of Quirra Violante Carroç that in his will, in addition to the large sum of 5.000 lire, gave ample information on construction methods and, above all, ordered him to draw on his other income so that the work was completed.
What spurred the Countess to this company does not seem to have been only the will to give the right prestige to his possessions, but the attempt to repair the fault committed by you in ordering the execution of the chaplain of Bonorsoli John Castangia, Whose only crime was to not return to the morbid attention that addressed the Countess.
For this gesture Violante was first imprisoned and stripped of all his possessions before being acquitted by the king Ferdinand II.
The Cathedral was destroyed by fire in the late sixteenth century, the existing matrix today, in Baroque style, dates back to the times of Monsignor Didaco Cugia, bishop alerese from 10 April 1648; Unconfirmed sources say that already the first St. Peter's Cathedral was built on the ruins of an ancient temple sacred origins of which are ignored.
Local legends tell of a tunnel that would connect the Aragonese Castle Carroz with the basement of the Cathedral, guarded by the infamous "musca maceda" huge insect place to guard the treasures still hidden in the bowels of the hill Barumele.
Il country of Ales is full of legends of the castle, the cathedral, and on 'archaeological area of Prabanta, A special charm covers the theory of French philologist Xavier Guichard, who in his Eleusis Alesia (1936), the origins of the names of ancient places in Europe, concluded that all the place names derived from three basic roots: "Burgus, Antium and Alesia "; the latter had the distinction of never having been assigned to a village founded in historical times.
In the Greek form "Eleusis" dated back to pre-Homeric times; in the Indo-European root "Ales, Alis or Alles", meant meeting point.
Examining all the areas identified, Guichard concluded that all locations that possess this root had the same morphological characteristics: low hills with a river at the base and mineral springs, the sites were therefore selected according to particular emanations of strength , and, rather particular, all these centers are linked together by real geodetic lines.
In mountain areas are the first signs of human presence (4000 BC) in necropolis of prenuragic Gemitoriu.
There are several of archaeological (including nuraghis complexes Gergui and Otzili), As well as the Roman period, when, at a time not specified, begins the story of the new Ales, due to the destruction of the ancient Roman colony of Uselis.
Ales became the seat of the diocese of the same name, which still exists, whose first attestations documents date back to the twelfth century.
Is linked to the bishopric all the subsequent history of the country and the economy, not more agricultural and pastoral, but mostly based on the service sector.
Located at the foot of Monte Arci on a natural depression crossed by a river (now channeled), Ales has always played a crucial role in the economy of Marmilla hosting schools, locations of important public and private institutions, and various offices of public force.
The country is known internationally for having given birth to Antonio Gramsci (1891), politician, philosopher and Italian journalist, was among the founders of the Italian Communist Party.
He has dedicated a square where the Plan for collective use, Monument Jo Tomato.
Among the monuments to visit, therefore, Baroque Cathedral of Sts. Peter and Paul 1686 of which has an important treasure, the ancient Parish of Santa MariaAttested already in 1535; there Church of San Sebastiano the 1663 and recently restored, el 'Oratory of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary (1721).
Do not forget the fraction Zeppara, Its old church, its typical courtyard houses.
